Wu Wei Landscape installation / 無為山水手卷裝置

2023, pen and ink drawing on wood panel; digitally collaged and printed on rice paper; framed as a handscroll of dimensions : 252” x 14”. Installation dimensions: 168”l x 14”w x 92” h.

First, shadows of a hummingbird nest and its surrounding branches and leaves are traced on a wood panel. Then these lines are repeatedly copied till they reached the four edges. And then, the image is scanned in high resolution. After that, it is digitally collaged to produce a long image. That final image is then printed on rice paper and framed as a Chinese handscroll. Although the image is abstract, the framing has an effect of it being a traditional Chinese Landscape painting / 青綠山水畫. This speaks to how our perception can be affected by framing.
